What is Chiari Malformation?
Chiari is a serious neurological disorder where the bottom part of the brain, the cerebellum, descends out of the skull. It crowds the spinal cord and puts both pressure on the brain and the spine. The crowding disrupts the normal flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Chiari causes many symptoms. Below are just a few:
- Severe headaches, often brought on by sneezing or coughing
- Extreme pain in neck and shoulders
- Difficulty swallowing
- Sleep Apnea, Respiratory Problems
- Loss of bladder and bowel control
- Numbness in hands and feet
